SITE 295 BERRY
Date: 1st May 2008
Observers: Marion Vincent and Brian Verity
Location: Strip pf land by the River Soar
OS Ref: SK59271321
Map Title: Site 295
Owners: Not known.
At the time of our visit this strip of land was not accessible due to closure by British Waterways. There is a towpath for access but now closed due to erosion. It has been closed for months and it denies access to a really good area for wildlife.
This strip of land was created by the building of the A6 By-pass and used to be part of a field bordering the old A6, Site 290 First Home Field.
This would be an excellent site for a species record as it is mainly undisturbed, too small for use as grazing and fairly inaccessible by farm machinery. It has been fenced off from Site 294 Plumptree and a hedgerow now separates it from Site 296 Hamer, which is basically a public footpath. This could mean that the towpath will not be re-opened.
