SITE 288 ALLOTMENTS (OLD)
Date: 2nd February 2008
Observers: Brian Verity and Marion Vincent
Location: Village Allotments accessed from Loughborough Road and Hallfields Lane.
OS Ref: SK58951255
Map Title: Site 288
Owners: Rothley Temple Estates.
These allotments have been in use since I moved to Rothley in 1962 and now their future is in doubt. The plan is to move them to a new site a couple of fields away so that this site and adjoining sites can be used for housing. The battle to save these allotments and to stop yet more housing in Rothley is underway but in March 2009 the battle was lost and remained lost despite appeals.
In January 2010 permission to build was secured and the site was invaded by diggers immediately. However, the 'digs' have been producing archaeological finds and more information is awaited. As we know, for artefacts to be documented can take years but as Brian Verity is our Heritage Warden for Archaeology he is keeping abreast with the happenings.
At the time of our visit in 2008 the allotments were looking very sad and unkempt and, on a February day, very unhappy after years of producing such lovely fruit and veg.
