SITE 274 ROTHLEY PLAIN CLOSE
This field is accessed from Gipsy Lane. There is no public access.
Date:15th August 2009
We first visited this field in March 2007 to record two Oak Trees 578 and 579 with girths of 3.6 and 3.5 metres. They are very vulnerable as they stand alone in the middle of this 'modern' field having once been part of a boundary hedgerow when Rothley Plain Close was, in fact, three fields.
A modern hawthorn hedge has been planted around two boundaries and it is not difficult to understand why! This newly created 'field' would make very good building plots and nicely front the modern Plain Gate development. The right hand side new hawthorn is nicely lined up with the last house on Plain Gate. This is why the two ancient trees are vulnerable.
The hedgerow fronting Gipsy Lane is old and a winter photograph taken in 2007 shows its features. There is an old gatepost next to the metal gate and another to the left so this was possibly the original entrance.
