SITE 187 SOAR MEADOW HAY FLAT, COSSINGTON LANE
Date: 24th September 2003
This meadow is used for horse grazing and floods badly from the nearby River Soar.
The field was 'cut off' from the farm by the Mountsorrel Bypass so the boundary at this point is new hedgerow. There is a pond, Pond 18, in the survey but this is about 10 years old and surrounded by conifers except at one end. It is like a 'flight pond' so that any ducks flying off when disturbed always use the open end to take flight and are then easy prey for the guns.
There were mallard on the pond and the trees used by songbirds. It needs another visit in the spring to see what the vegetation is like.
The field can really only be used for grazing due to flooding but it is interesting to see what is there when covered in water. In past years I have seen lapwings over this field but now the horses would disturb such birds.

We are back on this site as the Ancient and present Parish Boundary run along a non-existent hedgerow from Site 185 Forty Close. There is nothing to record for this.

This part of the boundary continues as in Stint 37 with Elder once again being a feature but more sparse on both sides of the ditch. There are more dead young Elms in this stint and more brambles. At the end of Stint 38C there is a large stand of Blackthorn, which extends into 38D. There is also Ancient Hawthorn that has been laid but only a few individual specimens.
A Public Footpath cuts across the boundary in Stint 38D at which point the boundary vegetation ceases and the ditch runs out into a small copse of Willow, which is in a bad state, in the Parish of Wanlip. On the Rothley side of the boundary we are in Site 187 Soar Meadow Hay Flat, which used to be made up of Soar Meadow/Easte Meadow and Soar Meadow Hay Flat.
We used the fence line as the boundary, no other option.

This boundary has nothing to record, as it is a fence with barbed wire for Stint 39A leading down to the bank of the River Soar where the boundary continues down the centre of the river to Sileby Mill.
