SITE 184 WOODCOCK FARM
Fred Barber, the farmer, is very amenable to people visiting his land for natural history purposes but on this day we were looking at the farmyard, with a Farm Shop, and just round the corner a Field Pond, Pond 20, in this survey. It is used by geese so vegetation has little chance to survive but it is used for a purpose that we see so little of these days. I have still not yet managed a photograph with them on the water. Moorhen also use the pond. The farmyard has a Listed Barn that is in very good condition but is used for work and storage. The farm is now arable and Fred is well known for growing his own potatoes. In the entrance to the farm there is a good stand of Giant Hogweed that comes up every year and is 'looked after' by the staff. There used to be a good stand of this just by the stable but it was growing on the outside of the yard onto a public highway so this has gone in the interest of safety.
The paddock around the pond is used for the geese to graze.
