After the Great War 1914-1918 villages were involved in plans for memorials and Rothley formed a War Memorials Committee. At the moment there is no information about this committee apart from being mentioned in the archives detailed below.
The obelisk is made from Mountsorrel Granite and a visit to their archives in February 2011 revealed the following history:

A letter was read from the Committee of the Rothley War Memorial and it was resolved that, if the committee desire to erect a memorial on the Green and would submit a sketch plan of the proposed design, this company would consider making a present of the monument as its contribution to the fund.

The Committee having submitted an elaborate design, it was resolved that the company make a contribution towards the cost of erecting the memorial and tender for the balance.

W B's notes on interview re Rothley War Memorial May 25th 1921:

Present: Mr Hames, Mr Collin, W.B. and Mr Henderson

Agreed that Mountsorrel Granite Company cut out ground and put in concrete foundation, this being cheaper done by local labour than Mr Collin's bringing men from Leicester.

Mr Collins to telephone price for fixing, Mountsorrel Granite to supply tackle etc.

May 26th 1921
Mr Collins telephones £68 as price for erecting.
