Rev. Mr Staveley's Charity
In Rothley Church it is recorded that Mr. Staveley, the rector of Cossington, gave 20 shillings yearly to be given in sixpenny loaves to the poor in Rothley by the vicar and churchwardens on St. Thomas's Day. The same persons were allowed to have the bread every year as long as they resided in Rothley and were still fit objects of charity.
This gift is recorded in his Will dated around 1650 with the money coming from lands in the parishes of Cossington and Birstall. He also left other charitable requests as well as money for the vicarage in Sileby. He owned 30 acres of land in Cossington and 10 in Birstall.
