Private 28709 George Harry Poynor

Gloucestershire Regiment, Previous to the Gloucestershire Regiment he had enlisted in Leicester in the Royal Army Service Corps as 1836 before being transferred to the 13th (Service) Battalion, Forest of Dean Pioneers, Gloucestershire Regiment as Private 28709.

Killed in action on the 22nd March 1918 in the France and Flanders Campaign aged 32.

He is buried in the Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension, France, in Grave lV.H.5 which has the inscription 'BURIED NEAR THIS SPOT' and 'THEIR GLORY SHALL NOT BE BLOTTED OUT'

Son of Charles and Mary Ann Poynor, brother to Anna M, Amelia and John E. Poynor. He married Agnes Emily Taylor in 1907 and their two children were Geoffrey Thomas and Marjorie Joyce.

His father died aged 51 in 1892 when George Harry Poynor was aged 11.His mother continued living in Leicester but George moved to Rothley as a Carrier living on Cross Green with the Baker family, also carriers.

Private Poynor is shown on the Rothley War Memorials as Private Poyner but his military records are Poynor as is the Census return. Named on the War Memorial, Rothley Parish Church Roll of Honour, Rothley Parish Church Triptych Roll of Honour and the Constitutional Club Roll of Honour.

The War Diary for the 22nd/23rd March 1918 records:

Battalion moved to TEMPLUER LA FOSSE TO CONCENTRATE WITH Div. Reserve and on the same night dug and wired with other troops the line LONGAVESNES-SAULCOURT. Fought a rearguard action returning through PERRONE & CLERY taking up a position near Herbecourt
