Reported as killed in action in Turkey on the 31st May 1917 but records show him as a Prisoner of War in February 1916 at Kiangeri. He was moved to Belemedik Prisoner of War Camp in 1916 where in the summer of that year typhoid and malaria swept through the camp. Private North reported to have died of malaria in Afion Kara Hissar POW camp, Turkey, whilst a POW, between the 1st April and the 31st May 1917 at the age of 27.
The total money due following death amounted to £52.17s 3d (including war gratuity of £15. 10s. 0.) was paid to his father Robert North on the 28th June 1921. This reflects the length of time held as a POW.
No grave confirmed in records. He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq. Panel Ref: 18 and 63
Sidney North was born in Rothley, the son of Robert and Mary North. The family fell on hard times and after his birth he is an inmate at the Barrow Union Workhouse with his mother. On the 4th August 1900 at the age of 10 he is moved from the workhouse to the Cottage Hospital in Syston where he was joined by his brother George on the 12th August. This was a hospital where young children were sent with scarlet fever and its remains can be seen today on the banks of the River Soar. It was built of corrugated tin.
In 1903 at the age of 13 Sidney was discharged from the workhouse into service with a Mr Condon but back again that year. In 1904 he was discharged on service to Mr Loseby of Thurcaston and in 1911 he is living with his aunt in Rothley and working as a farm labourer.
His mother died in the workhouse on the 16th January 1917 whilst Sidney was a POW in Turkey.

The Syston Cottage Hospital in 2004 but still to be seen in 2016. Children with Scarlet Fever were sent here and it was known locally as the Fever Hospital. Parents were not allowed in, they had to shout up to the high windows.
