Heritage Open Day 2009

Despite the Civic Trust (England) going into administration in April 2009 it was understood that English Heritage would be taking over the Heritage Open Days in 2009. However, the Rothley Heritage Team still went ahead on Sunday September 13th. There were also additional events at the Parish Church on Saturday September 12th as detailed below.

THE FOLLOWING TWO EVENTS TOOK PLACE ON SATURDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER

Saturday 12th September at 4.30pm Illustrated Lecture of the Life and Times of Richard Burton, Rothley's Cleric from 1852 to 1909.

Saturday 12th September 7.30pm A Musical Soiree with wine and nibbles at the interval. The renowned Cecilian Singers performed this musical evening. Donation of £3 requested.

Sunday 13th September Festival Sung Evensong using the 1662 Prayer book with the Sermon in the style of Richard Burton.

THE ROTHLEY CENSUS WALL

Full printouts for every household in Rothley for each 10 year census throughout the Victorian period from 1841-1901,with special stories from some households.

THE DEPARTURE OF THE DEAD

The first publication of the Rothley Heritage Trust is The Departure of the Dead, The Story of Burial in Rothley, and the book launch took place on Saturday 12th September in the Parish Church.

This is the 'Rothley Baptist Burial Ground Gardening Team' preparing this 'Secret Garden' in the centre of Rothley for the Heritage Open Day. We work every Friday morning from 10-12noon. Not shown is Steve who with Frank is doing the heavy work of straightening up the headstones.
