130 BROOKLEA NURSERY FIELDS

OS REF:SK589135

OS REF:SK589135

Date: 4th May 2002

The main reason for today's visit was to field walk over land that had been ploughed but not yet sown. Brian Verity, Archaeological Warden for Rothley, was keen to explore this site as it is the ideal place for Roman activity being on a slope and leading down to water. The soil is a mixture of loam and clay.

We walked the ploughed area and picked up possible man made Neolithic Period flints that Brian will wash, sort and record.
Following this we walked the field boundaries but kept out of Site 131 Brooklea Swamp Field for safety reasons. We were made aware that a member of the Brooklea staff had ventured into the swamp some time in the past and had to be pulled out by tractor.
