1060 TREES FOR SALE IN 1893
Searching through archives throws up some interesting information and some of it takes your breath away like in this Sale Catalogue of Warner Sheppard and Wade in 1893.
Rothley was to see the demise of 1,060 trees including 424 Oaks all to be felled on the instruction of Rothley Temple Estate in 1893. Below is a transcript of the wording. No details of the buyers. Rothley must have looked very sparse after this slaughter.

1060 TIMBER TREES, comprising 424 oak
392 ash, 184 elm, 21 wych elm, 24
willow, five beech, two sycamore, two maple, one
poplar, one alder, and four aspen standing blazed and
numbered in the hedge rows and various plantations on
the Temple Estate at Rothley; also a few Lots of
Alder and other POLES, and twelve very good OAK
GATE POSTS.

Messrs. WARNER, SHEPPARD, and WADE
desire to call particular attention to this Important
Sale, as it contains a great quantity of the largest and
best grown Timber which has been sold in Leicester-
shire for many years.
The Oak, Ash, and Elm are straight, lengthy in the
butt, and of excellent quality throughout.
Most of the Lots are near to good roads, and well
situated for removal.
Three Days will be required to see the whole of the
Timber.
Arrangements to view must be made with Joseph
Hickling, Carpenter, Rothley, near Loughborough,
who will appoint men to show the Lots.
The Auctioneers request the company to meet them
at the Royal Oak Inn, at Half-past Twelve o'clock.
Dinner in the Village Hall (close to) at One o'clock
prompt.
